ASTM F3340 Camping Mattress and Sleeping Bag R-value testing
Standard
ASTM F3340 Standard Test Method for Thermal Resistance of Camping Mattresses Using a Guarded Hot Plate Apparatus
What is R-value in ASTM F3340
R-value, as used in technical terms, is a measurement of thermal resistance; the greater the R-value, the more thermally resistant the material or structure is. Customers can use this figure to compare the warmth of various pads with a clear-cut assessment. They will be able to find the ideal sleeping pad as a result.
Why Does the R-value of a Camping Mattress/Sleeping Pad Matter?
Due to conductive heat loss between your warm body and the cold ground, if you were to roll out your sleeping bag and lay down on the ground, you would immediately become cold. A layer of insulation would not form between the two thanks to the compressed down. By choosing a sleeping pad with the right amount of insulation, you can keep warm all night long and wake up ready to tackle the path. This procedure explains why a sleeping mat is crucial.
How to test R-value
based on ASTM F3340, there is a sleeping mat sandwiched between two metal plates inside this thermally enclosed container. A hot plate (35 degrees Celsius) on top, which simulates the body, and a cold plate (5 degrees Celsius), which simulates the ground, are sandwiched between pads in this test. Testers track how much energy the top plate requires to maintain a constant temperature of 35 degrees over the course of four hours. The more insulative the pad, the less energy it requires. The less insulative the pad, the more energy it requires. An equation is used to calculate the R-value for each pad based on the energy needed to keep the temperature of the plate constant. The greater the R-value, the less power is needed to maintain the temperature of the plate.
